With a series of albums that have topped the UK Classical charts, Australian guitarist Craig Ogden is an eloquent ambassador for his instrument, and he won many friends when stepping in at short notice for Miloš Karadaglić two seasons ago. Now back with the Manchester Camerata he brings a collection of old and new works, showcasing the guitar’s versatility and his effortless virtuosity.

Albeniz’s exotic Asturias and Giuliani’s elegant Guitar Concerto rub shoulders with Göran Sollscher’s dextrous arrangement of Here Comes the Sun, and Einaudi’s hauntingly beautiful Due Tramonti. Tears will be no doubt be jerked in Samuel Barber’s heartfelt Adagio and the house will probably be brought down when Luigi Boccherini’s Fandango struts its exuberant stuff. There’s much more besides to enjoy, so whether you’re a fan of the classical guitar or a newcomer to its delights, this is one for your must-see list.

The accordion has had a distinguished but little-known history as a classical instrument. It is becoming far better known now, thanks in large part to the restrained virtuosity of Miloš Milivojević. His duo partner Craig Ogden records and performs worldwide. Head of Guitar at the Royal Northern College of Music, he has been described by BBC Music Magazine as: “A worthy successor to Julian Bream”. NB that tonight’s programme has changed a little since it was first published – it’s now even better.

Stoller Hall, Manchester
Manchester: UK
With: Craig Ogden and Aquarelle Guitar Quartet

Craig will be stepping in to help out the Aquarelle Guitar Quartet at their concert in Manchester’s The Stoller Hall this evening.

One of the Aquarelle Guitar Quartet members (Vasilis) has just had a baby in Greece with his Greek partner (congratulations!) and Vasilis is therefore unable to do the concert this evening, so the Quartet have asked Craig to fill in at very short notice. Craig has spent a day busily trying to learn all of Vasilis’s parts – 90 minutes of music!

This evening’s concert is connected to the 50th anniversary celebrations at Chetham’s School of Music. All of the AGQ members were students of Craig’s at the RNCM – Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and he also helped to introduce them to Chandos Records for whom they have released 4 or 5 CDs. Craig is extremely excited about having the chance to play in the quartet. They are four of the best guitarists he’s taught and their ensemble is incredibly tight.

Craig Ogden with Live Music Now

For this special evening, internationally-renowned classical guitarist Craig Ogden will be joined by Live Music Now musicians past and present. Opening with soprano Laura Curry singing Gounod’s exhilarating aria Je Veux Vivre, followed by virtuosic solo flute repertoire performed by Nicola Woodward, the first half will finish with “indecently talented”* folk duo The Drystones.

The concert’s second half features Craig Ogden performing a programme including Albeniz, John Dowland and Gary Ryan. One of the most exciting artists of his generation, Craig regularly appears as soloist and chamber musician at major venues and collaborates with many of the UK’s top artists and ensembles, this season including concerto performances with the BBC Concert Orchestra, Hallé, London Philharmonic and many others.

The concert is raising support for Live Music Now. The charity was founded in 1977 by violinist Yehudi Menuhin to realise his twin ambitions of nurturing young musicians at the outset of their careers, and bringing the joy of live music to all. Each year, LMN musicians deliver thousands of music workshops for audiences including people in hospital, those living with dementia, and children with special educational needs, in Bristol and throughout the UK. Since it started, LMN has given over 75,000 interactive music sessions for over three million people.

“My years spent performing on Live Music Now provided a rich and invaluable start to my career. It was a privilege to have the opportunity to perform for people who were unable to attend formal concerts, and the many memories I have of my LMN days will stay with me forever.” Craig Ogden, LMN musician, 1992-1999

‘Il Filo’ by David Gordon (world premiere)
Craig Ogden (classical guitar)
Miloš Milivojević (accordion)

Written for, and in collaboration with, Craig and Miloš, this is David Gordon’s third concerto. Il Filo – the thread – relates to an 18th-century approach to composition described by Leopold Mozart and others, in which ideas are subtly developed and knitted together, perhaps also with the implied idea of conversational engagement that feels appropriate to a double concerto. The eponymous first movement is in a flowing 7/8 rhythm while ‘Snapshots’ is a high-energy romp that gives the soloists a jazz workout.
