All Saints Church
Sudborough: US
With: Craig Ogden
Craig Ogden has proved his place in music as one of the world’s finest classical guitarists, possessing an unusual creative ability to push the boundaries of classical music repertoire in order to reach out to a wide-ranging audience, without allowing artistic expression to be compromised in any way. He is currently enjoying his second number one album success. Summertime follows The Guitarist – which stayed at the coveted number one position for five weeks – into the top slot in the Classical Music charts. After playing in high-profile venues such as The Barbican and The Royal Albert Hall, Craig has turned his attention to playing solo guitar in smaller venues. His interaction with the audience, relaxed style and communicative charm always guarantee audience enjoyment and appreciation of his music. Craig’s solo repertoire includes pieces from both his current recordings – well-loved classics such as Sevilla by Isaac Albeniz, and the hugely popular film music Ashokan Farewell, to exquisite compositions from contemporary composers such as Callum Dewar and Gary Ryan.

Craig Ogden with Travis Finch (mandolin)
This concert was originally scheduled for Craig Ogden and Alison Stephens. Alison tragically died on 10th October 2010 and it is a fitting tribute to her that her foremost student, Travis Finch should replace her in this concert.
Australian born guitarist Craig Ogden is one of today’s most exciting artists. He studied guitar from the age of seven and percussion from the age of thirteen. Ogden was recently honoured by the Royal Northern College of Music with a Fellowship in recognition of his achievements, the youngest instrumentalist to have received this award. Craig’s most recent CD “The Guitarist” released in July 2010 by Classic fm, has proved a huge hit and has set him apart as the country’s most popular classical guitarist of his generation.
Originally from the United States, Travis Finch is Alison Stephens’ foremost student. He has participated in Master Classes with Israeli mandolinist Alon Sariel and Dutch mandolinist Sebastiaan De Grebber. Since his arrival in the UK in 2006 he has performed in venues around London and the South East, performed at the Barbican and broadcast on BBC Radio 3. He is the mandolin soloist for the Song of Japanese Autumn and Klezmer Suite and will also perform the duet “De Aires Antiguos” with Emily O’Hara

Manuel de Falla took such fastidious care with all his music that those works he did finish are all exquisitely crafted gems, each encapsulating something utterly in tune with Spanish culture. His exotic collection of seven retouched traditional Spanish melodies and his flamenco inspired ballet score The Three-Cornered Hat and the guitar concerto by Rodrigo – still the most popular ever written – are conducted here by a young Spaniard who has made quite an impression on concert-goers in the last two years, Eduardo Portal. He finishes with Mussorgsky’s celebrated set of pictures in music – a touching walk past etchings and sketches by Victor Hartmann infused with the orchestral colour and power of Maurice Ravel.

Titania, Queen of the Fairies, awakes, realising that she has been humiliated by her husband, Oberon. She begins to sing her spellbinding lament… and opera steps down from the stage and into the room with you.
Titania’s Dream is part of Leeds’ annual Light Night festival, when arts across the city turn up in surprising ways and unexpected locations. The aria at the heart of this newly created live performance installation, ‘O Let Me Weep,’ is taken from Henry Purcell’s opera, The Fairy Queen, which was based on Shakespeare’s popular comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Titania’s Dream marks an exciting and immersive approach to experiencing opera, using elements of live performance, projection and sound recording to create a walk- through installation which will be open free to the public for Light Night. Whether you stay for five minutes or five hours, wander in and fall under the forest’s spell…

To celebrate the new year it gives us great pleasure to present Australian-born guitarist, Craig Ogden, another favourite with Manchester audiences. Having studied and lectured at the RNCM, Craig is now one of the most prominent players of his generation and frequently compared with Julian Bream. He has performed widely internationally at the world’s most prestigious venues, has broadcast regularly with the BBC, with all the major UK orchestras, and has an impressive discography. An advocate of new writing, his Spanish-inspired programme includes a new work by Manchester based composer Callum Dewar.
