Craig Ogden: The Guitarist
12 October 2012
Award-winning classical guitarist Craig Ogden performs at The Chrysalis, following sell-out appearances at the Royal Albert Hall and Barbican. His first album for ‘Classic FM’, The Guitarist, sold over twenty-five thousand copies and went straight to number one
in the Classical Instrumental Bestsellers chart, along with his second album, Summertime.
Craig Ogden…
Australian-born Craig Ogden has proved his place in music as one of the world’s finest classical guitarists, possessing an unusual creative ability to push the boundaries of the classical music repertoire in order to reach out to a wide-ranging audience, without allowing artistic expression to be compromised in any way.
After playing in high-profile venues such as The Barbican and The Royal Albert Hall, Craig has now turned his attention to playing solo guitar in smaller venues and festivals. His interaction with the audience, relaxed style and communicative charm always guarantee audience enjoyment and appreciation of his music.
This one-off recital in Milton Keynes guarantees audiences will witness a world-class musician in a perfect blend of relaxed surroundings and The Chrysalis’ acoustic perfection.
Craig will be playing and introducing selections from several of his solo albums: well-loved classics such as ‘Recuerdos de la Alhambra’ (Tarrega), preludes by Villa Lobos, Fernando Sor’s ‘Introduction, Theme and Variations on a theme from Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute’, and pieces from Elizabethan England (Dowland), early Italian sonatas (Scarlatti), a Bach lute suite, a waltz by Paraguayan composer Barrios, an Argentinean milonga by Piazzolla, a contemporary Balkan dance piece by Tadic, and one of Django Reinhardt’s popular jazz-influenced pieces, ‘Nuages’.

An evening evocative of a warm summer long past! From the heady eroticism and intrigue of an African harem to the simple passing of time in the peaceful hills of Provence, and the bella figura elegance of the Italian Riviera to the sultry orange fragranced heat and passion of Spain, the Pavilion will be suffused with the sun-drenched melodies and balmy atmosphere of the Mediterranean. Superstar guitarist Craig Ogden performs one of the most famous and popular of all concertos – the achingly beautiful slow movement is perhaps one of the most sublime pieces of music ever written.

Wonderful, world-class musicians, giving their time for a wonderful cause.
This concert is organised by the MAE Foundation, which concentrates on taking musical instruments and music teaching to thousands of refugee children from Burma in the jungle refugee camps along the Thai border.
Since 2010, the charity has already delivered more than a thousand instruments and songbooks to children in the Mae La camp. The aim of this concert is to finance the second MAE Foundation songbook, to buy more instruments and to guarantee the rapid expansion of our provision of music teachers for these bright, enthusiastic children.
Despite the changes now taking place in Burma, the children in these camps — more than 60,000 of them — will still be living in temporary, leaf-roofed huts in the jungle for years to come. Support the MAE Foundation and enjoy a superb evening of exciting music, played by an extraordinary line-up of virtuoso musicians.

Australia’s John Williams has for decades been one of the world’s great masters of the classical guitar. He performed as a young artist in the very first City of London Festival in 1962. This year he returns to give a concert with some of his musical friends and colleagues, including the distinguished guitarist and younger fellow-Australian, Craig Ogden, in spectacular Fishmongers’ Hall. His programme brings together music and musicians from across different ages and cultural worlds. The instrumental line-up for The Light on the Edge, by the Australian composer and guitar guru Phillip Houghton, includes an Aboriginal didjeridu. John Williams has commissioned English composer Steve Goss to write a new work especially for this 50th anniversary Festival, taking its title from William Dunbar’s poetic tribute to England’s capital: ‘London, thou art the flower of cities all.’

The glory of early summer in this corner of the Cotswolds is synonymous with world-class performances in beautiful venues. Churches, houses, barns and halls will be filled with a huge variety of music in this ever-more popular festival.
We’re enormously excited about the programme and hope that it will be a weekend full of highlights. We have a terrific collection of artists coming to Dean & Chadlington but we are particularly thrilled to welcome Sir David Frost as the interviewee for our live Desert Island Discs event.
We’re also incredibly lucky to have 24 choristers from the Choir of York Minster singing in both the Ditchley Gala and the Triple Concert and we will again see out the weekend in the beautiful surroundings of the chapel on the Sarsden Estate at our candlelit twilight concert.

Richard Campbell is well known to Portaferry audiences as a church musician and has been Director of Music at several local churches including St. George’s Parish Belfast where he has been organist since 2004. As the evenings grow longer, Australian guitarist, Craig Ogden, offers a deliciously sunny array of music for the classical guitar. Recently hailed “a worthy successor to Julian Bream” (BBC Music Magazine), Ogden’s success and wide critical acclaim continue to blossom.
Following a hugely popular debut solo album for Classic FM (‘The Guitarist’), and with nominations within the Classical Brit Awards’ “Album of the Year” category, Ogden’s recital promises to offer something for everyone.
With popular favourites by Albéniz, substantial works of highly subtle intricacy by Dewar and Scarlatti, and a stunning arrangement of Arlen’s timeless classic, ‘Over the Rainbow’, this is the quintessential recital for a summer’s evening.

PROGRAMME
Eugène Bozza: Three Pieces
Joaquín Rodrigo: Serenade to the Dawn
Judith Weir: Gentle Violence
Peter Sculthorpe: From Kakadu
Joan Tower: Snow Dreams
Heitor Villa-Lobos: Distribution of Flowers
Elizabeth Brown: Antarctica
Michio Miyagi: The Sea in Spring
Michael Parkin: Elegy
Ástor Piazzolla: History of the Tango
ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
Expanding on the international theme of Concert XXI, this recital presents music from all seven continents. Europe is represented by Eugène Bozza (France), Joaquín Rodrigo (Spain) and Judith Weir (Scotland). The Weir is based on Tai Chi postures, and is for the unusual scoring guitar & piccolo. Distribution of Flowers by Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos is a short, poetic piece comprising a lyrical flute part accompanied by chordal guitar writing. The four movements of History of the Tango by Argentinian composer and bandoneón player Ástor Piazzolla contrast the styles of four historical periods of tango. Snow Dreams by New Yorker Joan Tower may suggest the many different forms of snow, though Tower feels that music should speak for itself and requires no description or explanation. From Kakadu for solo guitar by the Australian Peter Sculthorpe is an intimate work expressing the composer’s deep contentment when visiting Kakadu National Park in northern Australia. The Sea in Spring – originally for koto and shakuhachi – is the most famous work by Japanese composer and koto player Michio Miyagi, and recalls his childhood memories of the sea, before he lost his eyesight. Michael Parkin’s Elegy to the lost and disappearing tribes of Africa is based on a recording of African pygmy singing, the beauty of which so haunted him that he ‘exorcised’ his feelings by writing these variations on the vocal material, scored for solo alto flute. Elizabeth Brown’s Antarctica for alto flute & prerecorded sounds chillingly conjures up the world of the frozen continent, and features idiomatic flute writing and atmospheric recorded material.
ABOUT THE PERFORMERS
Australian guitarist Craig Ogden studied at the University of Western Australia and the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). Hall Ogden Duo – Classic FM star returns to Roseland
Returning artists are a regular feature of Roseland Music Society concerts – they love coming back, and we love having them. Our March concert is an outstanding example of this phenomenon, when we welcome Graig Ogden, the internationally renowned Australian guitarist, along with his fellow Australian, flautist, Judith Hall. This will be Judith’s first visit to the Roseland, but it’s the third visit for Craig – he played for the society in November 2007, and for the Roseland Festival in November 2008.
Craig studied guitar from the age of seven and percussion from the age of thirteen. In 2004 he was honoured by the Royal Northern College of Music with a fellowship in recognition of his achievements, the youngest instrumentalist to have received this award from the RNCM. He appears regularly as soloist and chamber musician at the major London venues including the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Wigmore Hall and the Barbican, and collaborates regularly with many of the UK’s top artists and ensembles. Graig’s debut solo album for Classic FM, ‘The Guitarist’ went straight of number 1 in the classical charts, and his many film recordings include the British hit ‘Notting Hill’.
Judith was diverted from a non-musical career path by the renowned French flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal – he heard her play, and immediately suggested she become a professional musician. She studied with him briefly in France before moving to London. Her début in the Park Lane Group’s ‘Young Musicians and Twentieth Century Music’ series on the South Bank was very warmly received, and she immediately joined the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as principal flute.
Craig and Judith formed their flute and guitar duo in 2002. As a duo they have toured extensively, both in the UK and internationally. Their Portscatho concert will feature works by a wide and exciting range of composers, including Ravel, Villa-Lobos, Rodrigo and Piazzolla.

To celebrate the new year it gives us great pleasure to present Australian-born guitarist, Craig Ogden, another favourite with Manchester audiences. Having studied and lectured at the RNCM, Craig is now one of the most prominent players of his generation and frequently compared with Julian Bream. He has performed widely internationally at the world’s most prestigious venues, has broadcast regularly with the BBC, with all the major UK orchestras, and has an impressive discography. An advocate of new writing, his Spanish-inspired programme includes a new work by Manchester based composer Callum Dewar.
