THE HOLBURNE MUSEUM FOURTH EVENING CONCERT SERIES
SOLO BACH
Artistic Director: Jason Thornton
Ticket £24 (no concessions) Tel 01225 388569
Collections and collecting are at the heart of the Holburne Museum and our evening concert series is rapidly gaining a reputation for presenting collections of works by the greatest composers by a selection of Britain’s most celebrated musicians. The focus of our fourth evening concert series is J.S.Bach. We present complete cycles of his Cello & Lute Suites as well as all of his Partitas and Sonatas for Solo Violin.
In keeping with previous seasons we have a line-up of the very best performers in the country including LSO Principal Cellist and Soloist Tim Hugh, the astonishing young violinist Tamsin Waley Cohen and one of the most recorded Guitarists of his generation, Craig Ogden.
In the final recital, international concert pianist Ashley Wass brings us right up to date with a recital titled “Bach to the Future”, focusing on Bach’s influence on the 19th & 20th centuries including Busoni’s transcription of the D minor Chaconne and Alban Berg’s Sonata Opus 1. The picture gallery at the Holburne is the perfect intimate and inspirational settings for these intense musical experiences.

Bach Lute Suites 1-4

Originally written for the now obsolete lute harpsichord, this is a very rare opportunity to hear all of the Bach Lute Suites in one concert performed by one of their greatest living interpreters. Again these suites are masterful interpretations of the dance genres of Bach’s time. It is often said Bach had a particular passion for both the lute and the lute harpsichord.
Australian born guitarist Craig Ogden is one of the most exciting artists of his generation. As one of the UK’s most recorded guitarists, his recordings for Virgin/EMI, Chandos, Nimbus, Hyperion, Sony and Classic FM have received wide acclaim and topped all classical charts. He has performed concertos with all of the main UK orchestras plus many abroad and has presented on BBC Radio 3 and on ABC Classic FM (Australia).

Since Xuefei Yang last played for Music at Oxford (in a Chapel Series concert in 2010), she has shot to stardom, and is now acknowledged to be one of the foremost guitarists of her generation, developing new repertoire for the instrument through ingenious arrangement and commissioning.
A rare opportunity to see these two exceptional guitarists join forces. This concert will take us on a musical journey from the classical guitar’s beginnings in Spain to Brazil, Argentina and Australia.

Hall Two, King’s Place, London

Celebrated guitarist and Classic FM favourite Craig Ogden presents a unique collaboration with Norwegian 7-string metal guitarist/singer/songwriter The Commander in Chief. This will be their very first live UK performance in a programme to include a variety of solos from Craig and duos from this extraordinary pairing of two very different types of guitar. Together Craig and The Commander in Chief perform arrangements of virtuoso violin works including Sarasate’s Ziguenerweisen Op. 20 along with other pieces across the classical spectrum. Craig’s solo repertoire will include music by Scarlatti, Albeniz, Tarrega and Gary Ryan.

The Commander-in-Chief is a 24 year old Norwegian 7-string guitarist/singer/songwriter in metal, hard rock and classical music. An official Ibanez artist, she plays the prototype Falchion 7-string, the only one of its kind in the world. She is also endorsed by Laney Amps, EMG pickups, Audix microphones and Presonus. In December 2013 she released the first ever guitar recording of the classical violin piece Sarasate’s Ziguenerweisen Op. 20. It was immediately featured in the world’s biggest guitar magazine, Guitar World and in the prestigious Guitar Aficionado magazine, and was fourth on Guitar World’s Top 10 Viral Videos of 2013 after just three weeks. It charted as No. 1 on the iTunes Classical chart in Norway and it also charted in the USA. It is a ‘guitar duel’ with a classical guitarist – the recording and video has had a very surprising crossover appeal and it is being praised from people who are into all kinds of music genres. She was a guest on BBC Radio, on Mike Read’s show, where her version of Zigeunerweisen was played. The Chief was also featured on a major newspaper’s front page in Norway (Bergens Tidende, BT).
