Our first concert of the new season actually completes last season’s theme. It is the fifth in our “High Five” concert series with a performance of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony. This work’s fourth movement, the well known ‘Adagietto’, featured in Visconti’s film “Death in Venice” is arguably Mahler’s best known music. You will also hear music by Schreker and Ponce. Both these early twentieth century contemporaries of Mahler write exquisite and tuneful music and we will be privileged to hear our special guest the international soloist Craig Ogden’s interpretation of Ponce’s Concierto del sul which the composer dedicated to Segovia.

The concert opens with a chance to see the result of the NCO’s partnership with Chetham’s as some of the school’s young string players sit side-by-side with the professional players. Together they form the orchestra in a performance of Tippett’s Concerto for Double String Orchestra, conducted by Stephen Threlfall. Completing the programme is one of the grandest and most beautifully crafted symphonies that Mozart ever wrote – his Paris Symphony.

International guitarist Craig Ogden to play Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, September 30th 2017

Australian guitarist Craig Ogden is commonly known as the Aled Jones of the guitar world – one of the most electrifying classical guitar players of his generation. His albums frequently top the UK Classical Charts and composers are lining up to write music for him.

We are thrilled to announce that he will be joining Ely Sinfonia to play what is arguably the most famous guitar concerto of all time, Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, in Ely Cathedral on 30th September 2017. Inspired by the gardens at Philip II’s spring palace, the Palacio Real de Aranjuez, this exquisite piece evokes the sounds of nature to transport the listener to another place and time.

The Concierto forms the centrepiece of an exciting programme that also includes Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol and Danzon no.2, a delightful little piece by the Mexican composer Arturo Márquez, and finishes with Beethoven’s virtuoso Symphony no.2.

Excerpts from a Midsummer Night’s Dream are the hors d’oeuvres of this opening Brandenburg Sinfonia concert. The Rodrigo, with international guitar soloist Craig Ogden, promises to be a special treat – ‘arguably one of the most popular concertos of all time, thanks in no small measure to the extraordinary beauty of its central Adagio.’ (Gramophone). Beatles’ songs arranged for guitar and orchestra will provide lighter fare before the main course: Beethoven’s Symphony No 7 in A major, ‘the apotheosis of the dance’, offering ‘a joyous lifting of restraints and an outpouring of mockery’. Craig Ogden’s recording of the concerto displays ‘relaxed natural musicality’, ‘fluency’, and ‘superb technique’. (Gramophone). In association with Orchestras Live.

A main artery for London and a key feature of Barnes’ geography the River Thames is celebrated in much music and poetry. Distinguished British composer Stephen Dodgson is best known for his guitar works and enjoyed a daily walk by the river and this affinity is strongly felt in Watersmeet. The Boat Race paints a picture in music of the excitement of the annual race between Oxford and Cambridge. Local school children have been working hard to create their own musical version, BBC sports journalist Eleanor Oldroyd is our commentator.
