In 1991 proposed that an annual music festival be organised in the West Dorset village of Cerne Abbas (famed for the Cerne Abbas Giant), which is close to the family home of clarinettist Richard Hosford. The suggestion was taken up with enthusiasm in the village and the first Cerne Abbas Music Festival took place in July 1991. The primary focus of the programme was on chamber music by the classical composers, but also included twentieth century works.
The Festival has been extremely successful from its first year and is now the centrepiece of the Gaudier’s calendar. Cerne Abbas is particularly proud of its association with the group. Members of the Ensemble stay in private houses in the village during the Festival week and the village church, St Mary’s, is the venue for the concerts with stage and numbered seating arranged specially for the Festival.
This site brings together information about the Gaudier and the concerts and gives details of booking and membership of the Friends of the Festival.

Spend a year in the sunshine of Southern Spain with a poet and his constant companion, a little silver donkey called Platero.
Once upon a time, a hundred years ago, in Moguer, a small whitewashed town near Seville, overlooking fields of vines, olives, pomegranates and the Rio Tinto, there lived a little silver donkey called Platero, and the Nobel Prize winning poet Juan Ramon Jimenez, who was born and grew up in the town. His best loved collection, Platero Y Yo (Platero & Me), paints an affectionate picture of Moguer and the timeless Andalusian landscape which influenced a whole generation of Spanish writers including Garcia Lorca.
In this delightful new stage adaptation Mike Maran once again teams up with Georgian director Levan Tsuladze and puppeteer Nino Namitcheishvili, following their record breaking collaboration with Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. Top-selling classical guitarist Craig Ogden will perform the musical score especially composed for the stories. The performance is directed by Levan Tsuladze.

‘A joy to watch… this is storytelling at it’s finest’ – The Stage

With: Craig Ogden with Gerard McCrystal (saxophone)
The successful collaboration between Gerard McChrystal and Craig Ogden has seen them perform over 20 concerts to date, in a wide range of venues from The Wigmore Hall, London and St. David’s Hall, Cardiff to the Sugar Club, Dublin. They have recorded two discs and broadcast on BBC and RTE. Their repertoire is influenced by jazz, Irish folk and South American music. Original works from Germany, Australia and Brazil give the programme a true international feel.
As the Belfast Telegraph wrote of their 2006 Festival recital:
Historically, the combination of guitar and saxophone is an unconventional mix, so it was refreshing, albeit unsurprising, that this concert’s programme featured music written within the last decade. The compositions were modern and well-written but also melodic and accessible. Mid-morning magic! Belfast Telegraph 2006
Craig Ogden and Gerard McChrystal, set the thermometer high ….McChrystal’s saxophone swings acrobatically from high octane celebration to sweet and low down melancholy in one and the same breath, wheedling more and more layers of complexity from Ogden’s distilled guitar lines. Irish Times 2006
We were blown away almost literally by Gerard who, along with Craig and the music of Ciaran Farrell, got things off to such a wonderful start. Paul Herriot, RTE LyricFM, Blue of the Night Show live.
Superb playing by Gerard McChrystal and Craig Ogden. Review of CD Perfect State.

Vaughan Williams – Suite de Ballet for flute and piano
Arnold – Divertimento for wind trio Op. 37
Finzi – Five Bagatelles for clarinet and piano Op. 23
Britten – Folksongs for tenor and guitar
Lyricism lies at the heart of this early evening concert, placed there by an abundance of unforgettable tunes. This quality is infused in the colourful folksong settings of Britten and Malcolm Arnold’s ebullient Divertimento. It also rules the nature of Finzi’s Five Bagatelles and the folk-tinted character of Vaughan Williams’s Suite de Ballet of c.1913.
