Much like a modern artist’s response to a classical masterpiece, a range of critically-acclaimed contemporary poets including: Simon Armitage, Gillian Clarke, Nick Drake, Carol Ann Duffy, Craig Raine, Peter Oswald and Jackie Kay, will be inspired by some of England’s most beloved wordsmiths, before responding with new and celebrated works of their own. Actors and musicians will bring both the traditional canon and the contemporary replies to life.

Following the success of last year’s Winter’s Tales, in which actors read aloud stirring short stories under the glorious candlelight of the Playhouse, this series brings a melting pot of classic and contemporary poetry to the stage in what is bound to be a memorable and evocative evening.

Villa-Lobos Bacchianas Brasileiras No. 5

Beethoven Two Sonatinas Nos. 1 and 2

Bartok Romanian Folk Dances

It has been said that between Judith Hall and Craig Ogden there is a natural affinity which makes their performances together quite exceptional. They have performed as far afield as the Bahamas and throughout Britain to great critical acclaim, including festivals such as Newbury Spring, Calstock, Ryedale, Little Biggar, Budleigh Salterton and Salisbury International Festival: after the latter, the Director Maria Bota reported “great feedback from the audience, several of whom said it was the highlight of the Festival”.

Their programmes are lively and intriguing, mixing better-known music with contemporary and exotic pieces. A large repertoire includes arrangements of Bach and Baroque music and pieces from early nineteenth century Vienna by composers such as Giuliani to pieces by Villa-Lobos, Rodrigo, Ravi Shankar, Takemitsu, Judith Weir, and the King of the Tango, Piazzolla.

Australian-born classical guitarist Craig Ogden is one of the most exciting artists of his generation. With several chart-beating albums behind him, including 6 weeks at no 1 with “The Guitarist”, his latest Classic FM recording, “Summer Guitar” was released in June 2014, going straight to No. 1 in the classical chart.

He has also performed as soloist with many of the UK’s leading orchestras, including the London Symphony, BBC Symphony and Philharmonia, with whom he performed Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez in the Royal Albert Hall.

This is a rare chance to see Craig perform in a venue as intimate as the Chambers, and tickets are strictly limited.
