Seaford Music Society has been presenting the best in chamber music in Seaford for over 70 years. The Society hosts five concerts each season, in a comfortable and attractive venue, Cross Way on Steyne Road, Seaford (click on the Map for directions). The concerts are given by artists at the top of their profession, and all have an international reputation. Often they include their visit to Seaford Music Society in a schedule that starts in London’s major concert halls, such as the Wigmore Hall and the halls of the South Bank. As a small music society, we concentrate on chamber music, but still manage to present the full range of entertainment – for example, from single instrumentalists playing guitar or piano, through violin, cello or woodwind with piano, to string quartets.

Bach to Beatles
World renowned Australian guitarist, Craig Ogden, performs this concert of classical guitar favourites and timeless songs from the Beatles songbook. This programme was devised by Miloš Karadaglić who, due to injury, is unfortunately unable to perform. However, almost all of the original programme will be performed in full and Miloš will be presenting the concert.
Craig will be joined by the acclaimed Royal Northern Sinfonia in a richly varied programme that mixes the Baroque glories of Bach, Vivaldi and Boccherini with the sultry sounds of Tárrega and Piazzolla. The Beatles finale draws on the stellar collaborations behind Miloš’s new album, Blackbird, and features arrangements by Tony Award-winning composer Christopher Austin and even a fascinating take on Yesterday by legendary Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu.
We are hugely grateful to Craig for stepping in at short notice to enable Milos’s programme to go ahead in full, as originally planned.

We are delighted to welcome back a household name to listeners of Classic FM and Radio 3. With a string of No.1 CDs to his name, Australian born guitarist, Craig Ogden, is one of the most acclaimed classical guitarists of his generation. The Dankworth family and friends get together for a weekend of world class performances in a magical setting. Dame Cleo Laine plays host to a stellar lineup of artists as she once again opens to the public her enchanting private gardens at the Old Rectory for the 2016 “Music In the Garden: a Dankworth Family Festival”.
The Old Rectory in Wavendon, a romantic Gothic Revival greensand and limestone vicarage built in 1848 by architect William Butterfield, has been home to the Dankworth family since the late 1960s. Alec and Jacqui Dankworth grew up there and Dame Cleo lives there still. The late Sir John Dankworth thought the idyllic, Victorian garden would be the perfect setting for hosting his own music festival, which he started in the 1990s. Over the years John and Cleo played host to such diverse performers as Eddi Reader, Fenella Fielding, Darius Brubeck, Alexander Armstrong, and numerous others from the worlds of music, theatre and the arts.

Long before the Kirov Ballet got round to staging their Romeo and Juliet ballet using Prokofiev’s music in 1940, the bulk of the score was widely heard in a suite in which the composer arranged the most vivid moments of the score for concert performance. Audiences can’t have been in any doubt as to the characters and events Prokofiev was describing in what is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable conjurings of character, mood and circumstance in musical history. Before this ground-shaking depiction of Shakespeare’s Montagues and Capulets comes a treat from Australian-born guitarist Craig Ogden: Rodrigo’s sublime set of Spanish dances Fantasía para un gentilhombre.

CHRIS RAMSDEN
Craig Ogden was born in Australia but has been based in UK since 1990. He is considered one of the world’s finest classical guitarists: in December 2004, he was honoured by the RNCM with a Fellowship in recognition of his achievements.
The Anglo-Irish Carducci Quartet is recognised as one of today’s most successful string quartets. As international competition winners, their playing combines ‘high octane playing with devil-may-care spontaneity’.
The collaboration of Craig and the Carducci enables us to hear two guitar quintets, of which that by Castelnuovo-Tedesco is both tuneful and charming – and a first for Ilkley! The evening also features Craig in guitar solos and the Carducci in the fourth of Mozart’s string quartets dedicated to Haydn.

The popular and renowned guitarist Craig Ogden joins the Orchestra of the Swan for an evening of music from England and Italy, for which he has chosen concertos by Vivaldi and Malcolm Arnold. Both concertos are sure to delight; Malcolm Arnold’s writing is eternally witty and polished, whilst Vivaldi’s concerto contains the most beautiful and simple slow movement.
Orchestra of the Swan complements Craig’s selection by opening the evening’s performance with Pergolesi’s sparkling Concertino for strings. During his all too brief life – he died from tuberculosis at the age of 26 – Pergolesi was most widely known as an opera composer, but his concertos show a fine degree of skill and craftsmanship due to his experience as a violinist and a composer.
Britten’s bravura Simple Symphony, so called as its main themes are based on some of Britten’s earliest compositions, is a work of great wit and humour. Britten’s alliterative movement titles – Boisterous Bourrée, Playful Pizzicato and Frolicsome Finale – give a clear indication to performer and audience of his intentions.
The programme is contrasted by a piece of Italian opera with Crisantemi from Puccinis Manon Lescau. This was originally composed as a memorial to his friend the Duke of Aosta, referring to chrysanthemums – the Italian flower of mourning.

Having played to great acclaim here in December 2014, we are very excited to welcome back one of the UK’s most recorded guitarists for a Valentine’s Special this spring.
Australian born Craig Ogden is one of the most exciting artists of his generation; his Classic FM albums The Guitarist and Summertime both shot straight to No.1 in the UK classical chart in summer 2010 and 2011 respectively followed by the release of Christmas Time in November 2013. Both Summer Guitar which was released in June 2014 and Craig’s latest CD Craig Ogden and Friends released in June 2015 went straight to No. 1 in the classical chart.
Craig will play a select programme specifically chosen for this Valentine’s Special afternoon.

Craig Ogden is best known to British audiences for the popular repertoire contained on his string of best-selling albums for Classic FM. However,as his very successful concert for us in 2014 showed, he also excels in more serious works. For his return visit his programme is built round two modern classics – Sir Michael Tippett’s ‘The Blue Guitar’, written for Julian Bream, and Ginastera’s Guitar Sonata – both of which are their composer’s only work for solo guitar.
