Nourish Festival
Two concerts for the price of one: solo guitar – then guitar and flute. Old meets new, Europe meets Latin America in a programme full of variety.
Craig Ogden, one of the UK\’s top classical guitarists, will take the stage with a set which takes us from the sixteenth century to the present day, from classic Spanish works through the \’gipsy jazz\’ of Django Reinhardt to Lennox Berkeley\’s fantastic little Sonatina from the 1950s. After the interval he will be joined by Judith Hall – former Principal Flute at the Royal Opera House – for an equally varied journey, setting off from France and heading for the sensuality and rhythm of Latin America … with a few surprises in between.
Judith Hall and Craig Ogden have a natural affinity which makes their performances together quite exceptional. They have performed as far afield as the Bahamas and throughout Britain to great critical acclaim, including festivals such as Newbury Spring, Calstock, Ryedale, Little Biggar, Budleigh Salterton and Salisbury International Festival: after the latter, the Director Maria Bota reported \’great feedback from the audience, several of whom said it was the highlight of the Festival\’.
As you can see, their programmes are lively and intriguing, mixing better-known music with contemporary and exotic pieces. This promises to be another great Nourish concert!

Manuel de Falla La vida breve
As the sun sets on an early Spring day, Exultate Singers present an Evening Serenade of romantic music from around the globe. The choir is delighted to be joined by the internationally-renowned guitarist Craig Ogden and the cellist Richard May for performances of wonderfully atmospheric pieces that travel from the calm and stillness of Samuel Barber’s Sure on this shining night to the energetic samba rhythms of Brazilian folk songs set in a nightclub.
The central piece is a suite of seven vivid settings of Lorca poems for choir and guitar by the Spanish composer Castelnuovo-Tedesco, described by Segovia as ‘the first composer I have met who immediately understands how to write for the guitar’.
The Spanish fervour of much of the music is contrasted by reflective songs by Britten, Holst and the Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds. Stars sets a poem by Sara Teasdale in which the choir not only sing but play chords on tuned wine glasses, creating a mystical, cosmic experience.

LONDON TANGO QUINTET
Five acclaimed musicians drawn together by a love of the tango. Chart topping guitar virtuoso, Craig Ogden, is joined by the extraordinary accordionist, Miloš Milivojevic, described by the Times as \’a hurricane of musical invention\’. Pianist/composer David Gordon regularly tours as a jazz musician, harpsichordist and director of internationally renowned ensembles while double bassist, Richard Pryce, works with all the major orchestras and artists from Jamie Cullum to Shirley Bassey. Violinist and founder of the quintet, David Juritz, made headlines when he busked around the world for charity. His playing has been described by The Strad Magazine as having a quality of \’aching lyricism … naked expression in the grip of an icy control.\’
For their first appearance of 2018 the London Tango Quintet bring a programme of music by Piazzolla, Salgan, Troilo and more to the wonderful acoustic of St Peter\’s Acton Green in west London. Seating is at cabaret style tables with an open area for tango dancers.
For anyone wishing to try out tango for the first time there will be an hour-long beginners class starting at 6:30 given by one of London\’s most experienced teachers, Federico Mazandarani. [If you wish to take the class please buy the combined ticket – maximum of 20 people]
Wine, beer and soft drinks available.
Tickets available on the door subject to availability.

Antonio Jose Sonata for Guitar (1933)
Following his visits to us in 2014 and 2016, we are delighted to welcome Craig Ogden back to Bromsgrove again with another fascinating programme. Lutenist Weiss was an almost exact contemporary of Bach, but based mainly in Dresden. Antonio Jose was considered by Ravel to be the \’future of Spanish Music\’, but died, aged only 34, shortly after his Sonata was written. Nigel Westlake is a contemporary Australian composer.
